Experiencing hypnotherapy via Zoom or Skype used to be seen as highly unusual. Some recognised this method as progressive, while others regarded it with suspicion. Today it's different. Since COVID-19 changed the way we interact, Zoom has become a household name and online therapy is thriving.

The great advantage of online hypnotherapy is that it can be accessed from virtually anywhere - a fantastic innovation, especially for those in remote locations or living with a disability. But wherever you live, and whatever your situation, online hypnotherapy brings you some unique benefits.

Whether you choose face-to-face or online hypnotherapy sessions comes down to personal preference. The truth is that both are equally effective.

What is online hypnotherapy?

Online hypnotherapy is also known as virtual hypnotherapy, tele-health hypnotherapy or, my personal favourite, Skypenosis.

Contrary to what you might think, hypnosis doesn't require the therapist to be in the room with you. Online hypnotherapy sessions follow exactly the same format and structure as face-to-face sessions, the main difference being that you experience them in the comfort of your own home.

Does online hypnosis work?

Absolutely! Hypnosis is a natural state that you can achieve without being in the same room as me. As long as you can see and hear me, you will experience exactly the same benefits as seeing me in person. 

Remember hypnotherapy is plagued by many myths. For example, sometimes hypnotherapists are seen as having special, magical, powers. The truth is, the hypnotherapist isn't the one who performs the magic – it's you! You are in charge, and you are the one creating real change.

In some cases, online hypnotherapy was found to be even more effective! 

Being at home in a familiar, comfortable environment often induces a deeper hypnotic state, which can make online hypnotherapy sessions even more powerful. 

The only potential obstacle to online hypnotherapy is when there are specific hypnosis techniques or particular problems that a therapist prefers to deal with face to face. The best hypnotherapists will always be willing to talk first with you to decide which is the ideal way for you to experience hypnotherapy – face-to-face, online, or a combination of the two.

What are the benefits of Zoom therapy sessions?

Regardless of which hypnotherapy services you choose, there are multiple advantages to online hypnotherapy sessions.


  • No need to travel

Now you can relax at home and simply click a Zoom link to join the session without the worry of travel, parking, delays or crowded public transport. It also works well for those who are travelling but want to keep up with their hypnotherapy sessions. 

  • Comfort of your home

Being in a familiar environment helps you relax and create the atmosphere you want, be it your favourite chair, blanket or oil diffusers. You can truly let go and dive deeper into your subconscious. 

  • Saves you time and money

Time is our most precious commodity. Finally, you don’t have to worry about having to spend time on the road or figuring out how to get home or to the office on time after the session. You avoid paying for tolls, parking or public transport.

  • More hypnotherapists to choose from 

With online hypnotherapy, you are not restricted to working with a hypnotherapist in your local area. You can find one in another state, country or continent! This is especially important if you are looking for the best hypnotherapist for you. I’ve run online hypnotherapy sessions out of Sydney for people in Canada, Europe and Western Australia, as well as Sydneysiders with busy schedules or kids who prefer not to travel. 

  • More flexible appointment times

Having access to online hypnotherapy services can be very useful if you would like to see a hypnotherapist outside normal working hours. I can often deliver online hypnotherapy sessions as early as 8am or as late as 7pm, and on weekends.

With an online session, you can sneeze, cough or blow your nose without being concerned about others. You also eliminate contact with other people in the clinic or when travelling, and you don’t need to wear a face mask.

Are there any disadvantages to Zoom therapy?

There are some potential pitfalls, but these can be sorted with good preparation. The key issues that sometimes arise are:

  • Others in the house 

Let your housemates and family members know you need quiet for an hour or so, and see if someone can take your dogs out if they tend to bark.

  • Technical difficulties

Before the session, ensure your device is charged sufficiently or connected to power, and check that the microphone, headset and speakers are working.

  • Distractions

Make sure your notifications and other devices are all switched off or on silent.

Is online hypnosis dangerous?

Online hypnotherapy is a safe and convenient alternative to face-to-face sessions. In fact, it has become so well established and respected that many hypnotherapy schools now teach online hypnosis as part of the course.

A common hypnotherapy myth is that you can become 'stuck' in a hypnotic state. This just isn't possible. If, for example, an unstable internet connection interrupts the hypnotic part of your session, you will naturally return to normal waking awareness. We then reconnect using the same link and continue the session.

How do I attend a virtual hypnotherapy session?

As soon as you book a session online with me, you automatically receive a unique Zoom link via email, confirming the date and time you have booked. This link is safe and secure, and only you and I have access to it. 

Just before the start of the session, you click the link and follow the instructions. You’ll be taken to a virtual waiting room, and I’ll let you in at the agreed time. We will then be able to see and hear each other and work together in the same way as a face-to-face session.

The Zoom 'waiting room' feature prevents other people from accidentally or intentionally joining your session. I also use a unique password and link each time to make sure your sessions are secure and confidential.

You don't need to worry about time differences either. My Sydney hypnotherapy services are available worldwide. During your booking, when you select the time and date for your session, it will automatically adjust to your time zone.

Can my Zoom sessions be recorded? 

Yes, I can record the hypnosis part of your session and send it to you as an MP3 file. The whole session is not recorded for confidentiality reasons and in line with the hypnotherapy code of ethics.  

Can you guarantee the result? 

Hypnotherapy is proven to be a very effective form of psychotherapy, but results can vary, and occasionally people might not get the outcome they are looking for.

All therapies require a partnership and a commitment to change. It is important that you are highly involved and complete any suggested exercises that I may give you between sessions.
