Preparing for your online hypnotherapy session is a small step that makes a big difference. A calm space, working tech, and a clear intention help you relax more easily and get more from the session.

If you’re reading this because you’ve already booked, you’re in the right place. Save this page and use the checklist to prepare for your first online hypnosis session..

If you’re still deciding whether online hypnotherapy is right for you, this guide will also help you understand what to expect and how online sessions work.

Online Hypnotherapy Prep Checklist

To prepare for your online hypnotherapy session:

  1. Choose a private, quiet space (60–90 minutes uninterrupted)

  2. Use headphones and a laptop/computer (recommended)

  3. Turn notifications off (phone & computer)

  4. Test your internet, camera, and microphone

  5. Get physically comfortable (supportive seat + blanket + water)

  6. Spend 2 minutes on your goal, outcome and “how I’ll know it’s working”

  7. Bring a mindset of openness and commitment to change

  8. Keep a journal nearby for after-session notes

You don’t need to do this perfectly. Even a few of these steps will help you arrive calmer and more open.

Why Preparation Matters (Especially Online)

Online hypnotherapy can be just as effective as in-person sessions when you’re able to relax, feel safe, and stay uninterrupted. The goal isn’t “perfect conditions”, it’s creating enough comfort and privacy that your nervous system can settle and your mind can follow the process.

Think of it as creating the conditions for change.

What Happens During an Online Hypnotherapy Session?

Online sessions are structured, gentle, and collaborative. You remain aware and in control the whole time.

A typical session includes:

  1. Settling in and clarifying the goal

We’ll briefly check in on what you want to change and what success looks like for you.

  2. Guided hypnosis

You’ll be guided into a calm, inward state where we can work with the subconscious patterns underneath the issue.

  3. Therapeutic change work aligned with your goal

  4. Integration and next steps

1) Focus, Intention, and Outcome

A clear intention helps guide the session, but it’s even more powerful when you also take a moment to imagine the outcome and define how you’ll recognise progress.

A) Clarify your goal (keep it simple)

The clearer your intention, the easier it is for your mind to organise around change.

Choose one main focus for the session, such as:

  • calming anxiety and overthinking at night

  • building confidence / reducing self-doubt in specific situation

  • letting go of a certain habit or pattern

  • feeling safer in your body and emotions when in meetings

  • improving performance under pressure at work

If you’re not sure what your goal is yet, that’s completely okay. Bring one recent example of the issue showing up and we’ll clarify your direction together.

Helpful prompt:

“When does this problem show up most and what do I want instead?”

B) Visualise your ideal outcome (30–60 seconds)

Imagine a future moment where this has shifted:

  • How do you feel in your body?

  • What are you doing differently?

  • What are you no longer doing?

This isn’t about forcing positivity, it’s about giving your mind a direction.

C) Identify your “transformation indicators”

This is one of the most practical things you can do.

Ask: “How will I know this is working in real life?”

Choose 2–3 simple indicators, like:

  • I fall asleep faster or wake less in the night

  • I feel calmer before presentations

  • I ruminate less / recover faster after a trigger

  • I speak up more easily

  • I don’t second-guess myself as much

  • I feel steadier in my body (less tight chest, less tension)

If you want, write these down. It gives you something real to track beyond “I hope I feel better.”

2) Set a Positive Mindset and Commitment to Change

Now that you’ve chosen to take this step, it helps to approach the session with a mindset of openness and commitment. Real transformation begins when you allow yourself to fully engage with the process.

Believe in your potential

By booking this session, you’re already investing in a better version of yourself. Let that be a win you acknowledge.

Trust the process

Hypnotherapy is collaborative. Change can be incremental and still deeply powerful.

Stay consistent

One session can create meaningful shifts, and your results grow when you stay engaged between sessions (reflection, journaling, practising calm).

Let go of resistance

It’s normal to feel hesitation. If it shows up, simply remind yourself why you started. Meet the experience with curiosity and courage.

With this mindset, your session becomes more than an appointment, it becomes a stepping stone toward the life you want.

Feeling nervous? Try this

  • Let go of expectations: Everyone experiences hypnosis differently. Allow it to unfold.

  • Shift doubt to openness: If your mind asks, “Is this working?” try: “I am choosing to be open to change.”

  • Embrace the journey: Resistance can be part of the process. Every small step counts.

3) Minimise Distractions (So You Can Fully Relax)

The biggest thing that breaks depth in an online session is interruption.

  • Put your phone on Do Not Disturb

  • Turn off notifications on your computer

  • Let anyone at home know you’re unavailable

  • If possible, plan for pets/kids (or set them up safely beforehand)

  • Use the bathroom and eat lightly beforehand if needed

4) Get Comfortable

Choose a place where your head and back are supported: a supportive chair, couch, or bed.

  • Wear comfortable clothing

  • Keep a light blanket nearby

  • Dim the lights if that helps

  • Have a glass of water ready

Comfort helps your brain stop scanning for danger and start relaxing into the process.

5) Tech Setup for Online Hypnotherapy (Zoom / Video Call)

A smooth setup helps you relax instead of troubleshoot mid-session.

Recommended:

  • Use a laptop or computer rather than a phone

  • Plug in your charger (or ensure the battery is full)

  • Position the camera so I can see your face and upper body

  • Use headphones for clearer guidance + fewer distractions

  • Do a quick check of audio + internet before we begin

If something goes wrong technically, don’t worry, we can pause and reset.

6) If You’re Nervous (or Your Mind Is Very Analytical)

It is common to feel nervous at first, especially if you’re used to “thinking your way through” things.

A few reminders:

  • You don’t need to “do hypnosis perfectly.” You just follow guidance.

  • Mind wandering is normal. As soon as you notice you can easily return to the sound of my voice.

  • Hypnosis is not mind control. You remain aware and in charge of your mind during the process.

If you notice thoughts like “Is this working?” try:

“It is safe for me to relax into the next step.”

7) 60-Second Breathing Reset

If you’d like to arrive calmer:

  • Inhale for 4

  • Hold for 4

  • Exhale slowly for 8

  • Repeat 3–5 rounds

Longer exhales help signal safety to the nervous system.

8) After Your Session: Help the Change Land

The work continues gently after the zoom session, especially over the next 24–48 hours.

After your online hypnosis, try:

  • drink water

  • take a short walk

  • keep the rest of your day a little lighter if possible

  • notice subtle shifts (less reactivity, more calm, clearer choices)

Some people feel calm and clear; others feel tired or emotional. Both are a normal part of integration.

9) Keep a Journal Nearby (Optional)

Later that day or the next morning, write for 2–5 minutes:

  • What feels different in my body or mood?

  • What’s one small sign this is shifting?

  • What do I want to practise or reinforce this week?

Even short notes can help you see progress more clearly.

FAQs About Online Hypnotherapy

These are the most common questions clients ask before their first online hypnotherapy session.

Will I be asleep during hypnosis?

No, hypnosis isn’t sleep. It’s a calm, focused state where you can still hear my voice and follow guidance. if you are wondering: what is hypnosis and how it feels, many people describe it as deeply relaxed, like that in-between state just before sleep, but with awareness.

Will I be in control during our online session?

Yes. You remain aware and in control throughout. Hypnotherapy isn’t mind control, it’s a collaborative process, and you can speak, move, or open your eyes at any time.

If you’d like a deeper explanation, read Do You Lose Control During Hypnosis? The Truth About Hypnotherapy.

What if I can’t relax and can't go deep in a trance?

That’s very common at first, especially if you have an active, overthinking, or analytical mind. You don’t need a blank mind for hypnotherapy to work. You simply follow the guidance, and your body naturally settles as we go.

Is online hypnotherapy as effective as in-person?

For many people, yes, especially when you have privacy, headphones, and fewer interruptions. Some clients find online sessions even easier because they can relax in their own space.

What if we get interrupted?

We pause, reset, and continue. Planning ahead helps (private space, do-not-disturb on), but we can also work with real life.

What if the signal drops out in the middle of the session?

Internet issues can happen and it’s okay.

  • If the connection drops before you’re in hypnosis: simply rejoin the call when you’re back online. I’ll be there waiting.

  • If it happens while you’re in hypnosis: you will naturally come back to normal awareness. Once you’re reconnected, we’ll continue. I’ll be there waiting for you online.

If you have any trouble reconnecting, you can call or text me and we’ll decide the next best step.

Can I get stuck in hypnosis?

No, you can’t get stuck in hypnosis. Hypnosis is a natural state. Even if something interrupted the process, you would simply return to normal awareness on your own.

Have Fun and Enjoy Online Hypnosis Experience

Hypnosis isn’t only a therapeutic tool, it can also be a deeply enriching experience. Many clients are surprised by how pleasant and restorative it feels, and some say they wish the session didn’t end.

As you prepare, see if you can approach the session with curiosity rather than pressure. You’re not here to “perform” hypnosis, you’re here to allow your mind and body to settle, connect inward, and create the changes you truly want.

The foundation of our work is guided by the key principles for transformation from Milton Erickson, a simple framework that keeps sessions practical, client-centred, and focused on real change.
